The port of Cherbourg benefits from enormous know-how in dealing with heavy loads.

Cherbourg was for a long time a centre for the manufacture and assembly of offshore oil platform jackets and therefore is home to a great deal of experience. It can also handle oversized industrial cargo thanks to specific infrastructure. Specifically, the port offers a 320 metre wharf with a bearing capacity of 15t/m2, as well as RORO linkspans upt to 450t capacity.

It has retained this specific know-how and still frequently handles loads such as wind turbine blades, modules for the EPR nuclear power plant in Flamanville, and other large structures.
